Anonymous asked: Kenny mon! Would you please list your gear that you use for your live sounds. What are some of your influences and who are you listening to lately?
I play a Gibson Les Paul Studio through my pedalboard into a small mixer, which is then split into my amps according to live signal and loops. I use an axiom midi keyboard to control synths and samples in Ableton on my MacBook, which is also sent into my mixer.
For amps- I send my live guitar/synth as a stereo signal into a Fender Twin Reverb and Marshall JCM900/Orange 2x12 cab. The twin handles the bite and the Marshall/orange handles the lower end/body. The mixer sends loops from a pair of Gibson Echoplexes to my loop amps which I set up behind Jordan so he can follow the tempo easier. I use a Roland JC120 Jazz Chorus paired with a Mesa Boogie M-Pulse 600 feeding a Fender 8x10 bass cabinet for loops, similarly split up as a crossover according to frequencies. I use a Roland FC300 as a midi controller for the Echoplexes, which helps me access more complex functions like feedback, volume, reverse, etc while still playing guitar. I use two Echoplexes so it allows me to double a loop, then double or half speed it, thereby changing the octave as well (see “Salvo”, “Luma”, “Tetralemma” for examples).
My pedalboard is constantly changing, but I use a lot of delay and reverb live. I use the Boss DD6, RV5 and Space Echo a lot, as well as the MXR Carbon Copy and the Empress Superdelay for analog/tape sounds. Most of my distortion comes from a Fulltone OCD, but I also use a Way Huge Swollen Pickle for fuzz and a Keeley Katana for clean boosts. For noisy sections I use a Electroharmonix Bass Microsynth and Memory Boy, Digitech Whammy, Digidelay for glitchey looping, Boss BF3 Flanger and a Dunlop Bass Wah for thicker frequency sweeps. I have a bigger pedal collection at my recording studio that includes tape echoes and other fun/stupid gadgets but these guys are pretty much on my board all the time for live work.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Toe lately and I’m super inspired by them. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Bon Iver, Marriages and This Will Destroy You. Battles is pretty much always playing too. Thanks for your interest in my setup!
